____ STEM Education for Tennessee ($50)

Competence in Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) is becoming increasingly important for the future of Tennessee. Evidence that the state recognizes a significant need for quality STEM education is abundantly clear in the development of a comprehensive STEM infrastructure:

Tennessee's participation in the America Diploma Project

•New science graduation requirements aligned with post-secondary education and workforce demands that include higher expectations for students.

• New Curriculum Frameworks for Mathematics and Science that encourage and provide opportunities for interdisciplinary curriculum connections

• Embedded Technology and Engineering standards in science for grades K-12 and Embedded Standards for Mathematics in many high school courses.

Approval of Physical World Concepts (PWC) course standard for districts to implement a more rigorous inverted course sequence of PWC, Chemistry, and Biology

• The Electronic Learning Center, established by the TN Department of Education, as an extensive educational resource portal for teachers.

• STEMresources.com, launched June 2009, serves as a significant resource for STEM Education materials and tools.

• Three strategically-located STEM Education Centers at ETSU, MTSU, and TTU. Additional centers are planned.

• A statewide STEM Leadership Council led by the STEM Education Centers.

•Organizations, such as TSTA, that have a STEM focus.

• Support from state and local agencies including the Tennessee Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the TN Government Affairs Committee

Spend your day with an outstanding professional development team of STEM Education leaders discovering how you can become a dynamic partner in the effort to help Tennessee achieve its goals for STEM Education.

_____  TnSELA Professional Development Conference—“What Works in Building Collaborations for Systemic Change” Presented by Ms. Jeanne Narum, Director of Project Kaleidoscope ($90 which includes a Continental Breakfast and Lunch plus annual TnSELA Dues)

The potential and power of collaborations is one of the most significant set of lessons learned from the past two decades of work to transform science and math learning in our country.  From collaborations across institutional or disciplinary boundaries, within individual schools and colleges, and/or involving stakeholders throughout the system, it is clear that collaborations achieving systemic change have certain characteristics.  These include:  a leadership group (both advocates for and agents of change); a common vision that has emerged from analysis of circumstance and context (envisioning what it looks like if we succeed); an understanding of the process and politics of change (building collaborating teams of problem-solvers); and a plan of action that holds everyone accountable and keeps everyone informed.  But there is a spirit to successful collaborations that go beyond the process and the plan.  Collaborating teams enjoy working together because of their shared vision for student learning; they take time to note and celebrate success.

Finally, collaborations work when each individual knows how his or her strengths and passions contribute to the work of the whole.  In this workshop, we will look at what works from the experience of PKAL, an NSF-funded initiative that since 1989 has been a major player in the national effort to strengthen learning of undergraduate students in science and mathematics (technology and engineering.)  Throughout the sessions participants will explore some of the history and theory of change, examine some of the best practices emerging from efforts from a wide range of similar collaborations, and experience some of the personal and practical exercises that are used by PKAL to nurture effective collaborating leadership teams. It will be work and it will be fun.

_____  Misconceptions in Chemistry for Grades 6 through College ($50)

Chemistry is a conceptual subject and, in order to explain many of these concepts, models are used to describe and explain the microscopic world and relate it to the microscopic properties of matter. As students progress in chemistry, the models they use change and many contradict their everyday experiences and use of language.  This 6-hour workshop includes information and activities about some of the key misconceptions that have been uncovered by research and ideas about a variety of teaching approaches that may help avoid students acquiring some common misconceptions.   Presented by Dr. Al Hazari

_____  Inquiry, Engineering and Technology, and Mathematics in Physical Sciences for Grades 6-12  ($50) by Glyn Burton, Secondary Science and Math Methods Instructor at Vanderbilt University and 8th Grade Physical Science Teacher at University School of Nashville

Through hands-on, minds-on science, various methods will be experienced related to applying embedded strands of the Tennessee science standards including 1) inquiry of Bernoulli’s principle, pressure investigations, and Newton’s pendulum discovers, 2) engineering and technology related to inventing in science, musical science studies, and forensic investigations, and 3) mathematical explanations of friction car behavior, animals running a maze, and data and analysis of light physics.

_____  Teaching Energy Resources - For 2nd Grade Science Teachers Only ($5) 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Science teachers in grade 2 may attend this 3-hour workshop to receive a free kit, valued at approximately $100, to teach about renewable and non-renewable resources and energy conservation.  Participants will engage in hands-on activities included in the kit and will take a kit home with them.  ONLY teachers in 2nd grade can attend.  Sponsored by the TN Department of ECD - Energy Policy Office.  Presented by Ramona Nelson, Energy Education Specialist.  Limit 30 participants.

____  Teaching Energy Resources - For 7th Grade Science Teachers Only ($5) 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Science teachers in grade 7 may attend this 3-hour workshop to receive a free kit, valued at approximately $100, to teach about renewable and non-renewable resources and energy conservation.  Participants will engage in hands-on activities included in the kit and will take a kit home with them.  ONLY teachers in 7th grade can attend.  Sponsored by the TN Department of ECD - Energy Policy Office.  Presented by Ramona Nelson, Energy Education Specialist.  Limit 30 participants.

NOTE: The session below was added August 30, 2009.  It is not on earlier printed forms.

____________UT Martin Institute for Chemistry and Physics Presentation ($5.00)

In June 2009 UT Martin hosted the Institute for Chemistry and Physics (ICaP), a 2-week standards-based Physical Science workshop funded by the Tennessee Math-Science Partnership program.  Following the summer workshop, participants did research projects what enhance their ability to teach material and use equipment form the workshop.  This session starts with a brief summary of the ICaP program followed by presentations of the projects including demonstrations on in-class activities and lesson plans and concluding with a Q & A.  Applications for teachers interested in participating in the 2010 workshop will be provided.
